Nerikomi Workshop

📅 15, 22 and 29 January 2026 (three days) | ⏰ 10am–4pm | Cost: $350 | 5 places available

Discover the beauty of nerikomi pottery, a Japanese technique where coloured clays are layered and patterned to create stunning, one-of-a-kind designs.

Colouring the clay

This three-part workshop will take you through the full process:

  • Day 1: Let yourself be inspired by the world around you — by the stripes found in nature, in landscapes, or in the built environment. Notice what draws your eye, what intrigues you, and explore how those visual rhythms can be translated into a pattern of your own.

You’ll dive into colour and form as you tint your clay and build a richly patterned slab that reflects your personal response to what you’ve observed. From this slab, you’ll create one or more simple objects (on day 2) that carry your unique mark.

The focus of the day is on the translation — turning observation into pattern, and inspiration into something tangible and personal.
  • Day 2: On this day you’ll create an simple object from the nerikomi slab you built on day 1. Then we’ll move on to the creation of a flower pattern and building your own unique slab with the coils created by everyone in the group. Your object will undergo its first firing, and is ready for glazing on day 3. Your flower slab will rest.
  • Day 3: The unveiling! You’ll lightly sand your first object, which has been fired once in the kiln. Finally, glaze your piece to add depth and brilliance, before it returns to the kiln for its second firing — emerging as finished, one-of-a-kind artwork. You’ll also create a second object from your flower slab. This will be fired (and possibly glazed by us) and both objects can be collected at a later date from the pottery.
